An Epic Time at an Epic Croaker Tournament

By: Kaelyn Krause

The York County Waterways Alliance along with Historic Triangle Ducks Unlimited and Dare Marina and Yacht Sales hosted their 4th Annual Croaker Tournament this past Saturday August 17, 2013 at Dare Marina.  An all time high of sixty-one boats registered this year and the stakes were high. The Yorktown Crier Poquoson Post had our own boat consisting of our Publisher, Mary Leedom, Business Manager, Geoffrey Owens, Editor, Kaelyn Krause, and friend of the paper, Carl Lamberti. We had a late start in respect to the fishing aspect of the event but that did not deter us from throwing out some lines in hopes of catching a $2,000 fish.

There was a strong wind from the northeast and the water was rough so Geoff sought out a “wind-sheltered cove”.  Once we found said cove Geoff and Mary were catching fish left and right. They were small but plentiful. Carl threw a line behind his back and caught a trick fish. Kaelyn caught sticks and seaweed. After a few hours out on the open water we decided to dock the boat and try our luck on the pier. With dogs running wildly all around Geoff had the biggest catch of the day so we packed up and headed to the weigh in at Dare Marina.  We unloaded ourselves from the car and our soon-to-be award winning fish as we caught a glimpse of another fisherman’s catch and decided our fish would be saved for crab pots.

We headed to the award ceremony where entertainment was provided by “All You Can Eat”. Delicious food was provided by “Smokin’ Joe’s B-B-Q” and a “Ben and Jerry’s” truck showed up to the several hundred attendees’ delight.

Some people did catch some really big fish.

First place and the $2,000 was awarded to Todd Kreikamp and his team ‘Mayfly’ for their monster Croaker weighing in at 1.74 lbs. Second place was awarded to Tom Phillips and his team ‘Natie Lite’. They caught a 1.46 lb. croaker and took home a $500 prize. Joseph Kennedy took third with a 1.36 lb. croaker and Sid Stanley and his team, ‘Dynasty Limo’ came in a close 4th with a croaker weighing 1.35 lbs. The Calcutta winners was the team, ‘Naked Lady’ who caught a 34.4 lb. Cow Nose Ray and took home a $750 prize.

Scrappy’s Landscaping earned $260 for catching a 2.35 lb toad fish. Cliff Bauman Jr. came in second with a toad fish weighing in at 1.90 lbs.

The winners of the youth division who took home trophies and prizes were first place: Hayden Head with a 1.33 lb. catch; second place: Cliff Bauman Jr. with a 1.10 lb. catch and Scott Elford took third place with a 1.10 lb. Catch.

We at the Yorktown Crier may not have had much success in the actual tournament but we reaped the awards of the raffle taking home two coolers, a cigar filled cigar carrier, two hats, and a t-shirt emblazoned with our favorite type of beer. The turnout for the tournament and the award ceremony (and the great time had at the award ceremony) were epic.
